Marina Militare Awards the DEEP LIGHT Project Led by SunCubes
La Spezia, February 19, 2026. On the occasion of the PNS Progress Meeting, held on February 19 in La Spezia at the Naval Support and Experimentation Center (CSSN) of the Marina Militare (Italian Navy), the DEEP LIGHT project was presented and awarded. The project has been recognized and supported by the Italian Navy through the Polo Nazionale della dimensione Subacquea (PNS) as a strategic initiative for the development of national underwater technological capabilities.
DEEP LIGHT, developed by SunCubes in partnership with Dualee, aims to create an underwater laser platform for wireless energy transfer, designed to recharge and directly power autonomous underwater systems. The objective is to overcome one of the main limitations of submerged missions: dependence on onboard energy capacity and the consequent need to recover vehicles for recharging.
DEEP LIGHT features an underwater energy distribution architecture based on a high-power laser transmitter and a receiver integrated into autonomous vehicles. Operating in the blue-green optical window, optimized for marine propagation, the system enables contactless energy transfer over distances of several tens of meters, allowing recharging operations directly underwater.
The technology enables continuous and distributed operation of underwater vehicles without the need for surfacing or physical connections. In the civilian sector, it extends the duration of environmental monitoring and offshore surveillance missions, while in the defense domain it supports continuous ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) operations and contributes to the protection of strategic maritime infrastructure. The project is part of the PNS initiatives aimed at strengthening national technological capabilities in the underwater dimension through targeted investments by the Italian Navy.
Davide Russo, CIO of SunCubes, stated:
“The event was not only an opportunity to present new projects and assess the progress of those already underway, but also a constructive moment of dialogue aimed at strengthening synergies between the Hub and the companies involved, laying the foundations for effective strategic planning in the coming years.”
Alberto Chiozzi, CEO of SunCubes, added:
“This investment aligns perfectly with our strategic vision of positioning SunCubes as a leader in wireless power transmission. The underwater domain represents a new frontier in the protection and sensing of critical assets. Today, limitations related to energy availability are among the main constraints holding back the growth of this sector. Overcoming them means enabling new operational capabilities and unlocking significant development potential.”

SunCubes demonstrates safe long-distance laser charging: the 2025 experimental campaign completed
In July 2025, the company completed an experimental campaign, a key opportunity to test the performance of the technology and verify its operation at a distance of 120 m in a controlled and repeatable environment.
The experimentation, coordinated by CTO Tommaso Aresi, aimed to analyze in detail the behavior of the laser beam during energy transmission to electronic devices. In particular, the team measured the system’s efficiency, the beam intensity, its divergence, and its ability to self-calibrate by precisely targeting the receiver.
A key step of the campaign was the long-distance charging of a light bulb as a demonstrative load, replaceable with several other devices. The tests conducted demonstrated the stable and continuous powering of the bulb at a distance of 120 m, confirming the full functionality of the system.
According to Aresi, one of the most innovative aspects of SunCubes’ technology lies in its ability to operate fully within regulatory limits, keeping user safety at the center of the design. “Our patent enables a new way of using lasers in everyday applications,” he says. “The goal is that no protective goggles are required for safe operation, without sacrificing performance.”
The success of the campaign opens interesting scenarios for several sectors: charging security cameras, drones in flight, remote sensing, and all applications that can benefit from a stable, contactless wireless power system.
The results achieved represent the basis for the next step in SunCubes’ path: transferring the technology to the products under development, including the Lucy and Light systems.
To share behind-the-scenes insights from the campaign with the public, SunCubes has produced a dedicated video that showcases the key moments of the experimentation and the work of the team during the tests, published on every social media platform.
With this campaign, SunCubes confirms its pioneering role in long-distance wireless charging and prepares for the next phase of technological evolution, with tests on dynamic drone charging in hovering and in motion already planned to begin this month (December 2025), bringing new opportunities for collaboration and application.
