SunCubes Starts Build-Out of FUCINA-01, Its Free-Space Optical Testing Facility in Milan

The new facility will support controlled experiments on high-power laser transmission in free space, advancing SunCubes’ work on the control layer of optical power.

Milan, June 25, 2026 - SunCubes, an Italian deep-tech company developing the control layer of optical power, has started the build-out of FUCINA-01, its free-space optical testing facility in Milan.

FUCINA-01 will be dedicated to controlling experimental activity on high-power laser transmission in free space. The facility is being designed to support SunCubes’ work on optical control systems: the hardware, software, control logic, and integration layer required to point, track, stabilize, manage, and safely deliver optical power over distance.

For SunCubes, the facility represents a major infrastructure step.

“FUCINA-01 is being built to give SunCubes the testing infrastructure required to validate optical power control in real conditions,” said Alberto Chiozzi, CEO and Co-Founder of SunCubes. “We are not only developing wireless energy transmission. We are building the control layer required to make optical power usable, safe, and integrable across different systems.”

The facility will support testing activities across beam control, pointing and tracking, stabilization, receiver alignment, safety logic, thermal behavior, system diagnostics, and integrated hardware-software performance.

“Building FUCINA-01 is an execution milestone for the company,” said Federico Ognibene, COO and Co-Founder of SunCubes. “Deep-tech systems need dedicated infrastructure, disciplined testing, and repeatable processes. This facility gives us the operational base to move faster, reduce integration risk, and bring optical power control closer to field-relevant validation”.

The build-out of FUCINA-01 comes as SunCubes broadens its work across optical power systems for remote infrastructure, autonomous platforms, industrial applications, and partner-integrated technologies.

The company’s focus is the control layer of optical power: the ability to direct, stabilize, manage, and safely apply laser energy over distance. This capability is relevant wherever high-precision optical systems must operate with reliability, from wireless power transmission and autonomous platforms to controlled dual-use applications for defensive scenarios. FUCINA-01 will provide SunCubes with a dedicated environment to test these systems under controlled conditions, without disclosing operational parameters or sensitive performance data.

FUCINA-01 is part of SunCubes’ broader effort to turn optical power from a laboratory capability into an engineering system that can be tested, measured, integrated, and validated.

As the build-out progresses, the facility will become a central technical asset for SunCubes’ internal development, partner demonstrations, and future validation campaigns.

About SunCubes

SunCubes is a deep-tech company developing optical power systems based on laser technology.

The company builds the control layer of optical power: the systems, software, control logic, and integration layer required to point, track, stabilize, manage, and safely deliver optical power over distance.

SunCubes’ broader vision is to make light a new utility layer for energy transmission and high-precision optical systems, enabling new forms of cable-free autonomy and optical power delivery where conventional infrastructure is impractical, expensive, or operationally limiting.
