SunCubes and Worldsensing Successfully Test Wireless Recharging for Loadsensing Railway Monitoring Sensors

The field test, conducted with Worldsensing and hosted by FGC on the Lleida, La Pobla de Segur railway line, validates SunCubes Light as an on-demand optical recharging system for hard-to-access monitoring nodes.

Milan / Barcelona, August 4, 2026 – SunCubes and Worldsensing have successfully completed a field test of SunCubes Light for the wireless recharging of a Worldsensing Loadsensing railway monitoring sensor.

The test was carried out with the Worldsensing team on the Lleida, La Pobla de Segur railway line, operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), which made the testing site available for the activity.

During the test, SunCubes Light wirelessly recharged the battery of a Loadsensing sensor using laser-based optical power transmission. The test demonstrated that an external power cable is not required to recharge the sensor battery in the field.

SunCubes Light is designed as a portable, on-demand wireless recharging unit for remote sensors and monitoring nodes. In this configuration, the transmitter can be moved by an operator and positioned when a recharge operation is required. The receiver is installed near the sensor and converts the incoming optical beam into electrical power for battery recharging.

A typical recharge operation is expected to last a few tens of minutes, after which the sensor battery can remain charged for months, depending on the sensor configuration, operating cycle, and field conditions.

The commercial configuration of SunCubes Light is designed to operate up to 100 meters, giving infrastructure operators and system integrators a new option for powering monitoring devices where cabling is expensive, difficult, or operationally disruptive.

For railway and infrastructure monitoring, this approach can reduce the need for manual battery replacement, trenching, fixed power lines, or complex local energy installations. A single receiver can be installed near the monitoring point and is designed to support the recharging of multiple sensors in parallel, depending on the deployment architecture.

The test is particularly relevant for geotechnical, structural, and railway monitoring applications, where sensors are often installed in locations that are difficult to access regularly but require long-term data continuity.

“Battery replacement is one of the most practical constraints in large-scale infrastructure monitoring,” said Alberto Chiozzi, CEO and Co-Founder of SunCubes. “With SunCubes Light, our objective is to give operators a portable way to recharge sensors in the field without installing cables or replacing batteries manually. This test with Worldsensing and FGC is an important step because it validates the system in a real railway monitoring environment.”
“Wireless recharging has the potential to extend the autonomy of monitoring” said Francisco Hernández-Ramírez, VP Innovation & Compliance at Worldsensing. “Testing SunCubes Light with a Loadsensing device allows us to assess how optical power can support infrastructure monitoring deployments.”
“At Worldsensing, we are focused on making infrastructure monitoring more reliable, scalable, and easier to deploy,” said Ignasi Vilajosana, CEO of Worldsensing. “This collaboration with SunCubes allows us to explore a new approach to sensor power management, with the potential to support longer deployments for our customers and partners.”

The test marks an important technical step for SunCubes Light and opens the path to further validation activities with infrastructure operators, monitoring providers, and system integrators.
